Stormy Records has been open for 8 years. We opened the store to fill a necessary void in the Detroit area. We created an outlet for all the odd and unusual music that we like to listen to ourselves, and that we knew other people would like to hear but were having trouble finding. Stormy Records specializes in what we like to call "weirdo music" – hard to find specialty items on independent labels. We carry virtually no major label releases, but you can come here and find psychedelic rock from places like Japan, Turkey, Britain, and Finland. You can buy death metal colored vinyl lps from Norway and Brazil. We have beautiful drones, ambient electronica, modern composers, noise and experimental music. We carry currently issued vinyl lps of both independent bands and reissues of 1960's rock n roll and avant jazz.

In addition to the new items we sell, we have thousands of used records. Jazz, rock, r&b, reggae, blues, and soundtracks, as well as a large number of 45s. We buy used records nearly every day, and put newly priced lps on the sales floor each weekend. We are constantly adding to and updating our used record department, so stop by on a regular basis to see what's new.

And, here is a little background info on the people who own Stormy. Windy and Carl have been in the business for 19 years, with Windy only ever working at record stores. She started selling records in 1988, and has worked for both large corporations and small independent stores. Carl started working in a record store 10 years ago, and has been dedicated to learning as much as possible about records and music ever since. Windy and Carl grew up listening to music and started buying records at a very young age, and throughout that time, collecting memories of all the different record stores they visited. When it was time to start Stormy, they used their favorite memories of from all those stores to create a place of community, a place to learn and hear and be exposed to information and great sounds. When you come to Stormy Records, you will get unbiased opinions on music, help from people who actually care about what you are listening to and looking for, information on upcoming shows and new releases, and an environment that is hard to find these days – an environment you certainly will not find at the big box stores and large chains.
